Helloooo friends! Ah man. I gotta admit, I was really excited and come back and blog. I almost logged in to post last night, but I wanted to give myself a full week to digest and ponder the thought of shutting the blog down. The sweet comments and texts definitely helped (THANKS YOU GUYS! I feel like way less of a self-obsessed loser now), but I really knew I didn’t want to close the blog down when I realized I kept mentally thinking, “I can’t wait to blog about this!” all weekend. You’re stuck with me!

A name change is definitely in the works. I know what it is, and I want to kick it off with a new blog design for my blog-iversary that is coming up in the next month or so. College Graduette was meant to be sort of an “advice-y” blog on things I did to help transition to a crazy full-time work schedule after graduating from school, and I think it has definitely served its purpose. The new blog name/focus is going to reflect what I post about more often (and enjoy more than pretending to be an expert, haha) – the randomness of my life and how I focus on bringing out the best in every day, through food (both good for your body and good for your inner fat kid), exercise, goal-setting, and smart life tips. Comin’ atcha soon! And don’t worry, the old posts will come along for the ride.

Now for a lil weekend recap – it was a good one!

First of all, I made these healthy breakfast egg muffins from Blogilates on.. Thursday? and they were a BIG hit over here.

IMG_0341

I made 12 total using 2 cups of egg whites and 3 eggs, with sausage, mushroom, pepper and cheese in Brandino’s and spinach, mushroom, pepper and tomato for me. Okay, so mine were healthy.

Eggs with some sort of veggie incorporated is my #1 favorite breakfast – I even did a post way back in the day on working veggies into breakfast! This habit goes way back to my South Beach Diet days in high school, and it’s stuck because it’s a good one. Protein + early kick of veggie = win. These "egg cups”, as we’ve been calling them, are so easy – you’re only 30 seconds in the microwave away from a perfect breakfast each morning. They are so good and so easy I have another batch in the oven right now – 12 whole muffins for each of us.

All the nutritious breakfast food got to our heads and we decided to go skiing at Afton Alps on Saturday, which is a ski hill about an hour away from the Cities. I pretty much learned how to ski from scratch when we went to Jackson Hole with friends last winter, and since downhill skiing is one of Brandon’s absolute favorite things to do, we wanted to be sure I got at least a little practice in this winter. I’ve slowly been building up a ski-appropriate wardrobe, so we stopped at REI on the way to the hill to pick up some necessities:

(do I look cool? Yeah, I definitely look cool. Okay, stop taking pictures.)

Can I just stop for a minute and discuss how much I LOVE going to REI? Being in that store makes me want to learn how to do every outdoorsy activity and spend every weekend in nature – camping, climbing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, canoeing… sign me up! And buy me a sweet backpack, two-man tent, and complete backpacker’s food kit to go along with all my new hobbies!

Considering I don’t even have my own waterproof ski-worthy coat yet, I have a ways to go. I ended up purchasing the helmet in the pics above and some goggles that I really like – both on sale!IMG_0338

I definitely look like I know what I’m doing, right? I love any activity that gets Brandon and me outside and being active together, and it’s fun to share something that Brandon loves so much, so I want to go on many ski adventures in the future. I think it was a good investment.

The ski hill at Afton is a little different than Jackson Hole…

Um, that’s Jackson Hole.

That’s Afton!

IMG_0336

Who’s that cute skiier?

IMG_0335

(“What are you doing? Taking pictures? Okay. Stop.”)

We skiied for a little over two hours, when we both started to get a little cold. The lifts at Afton are sort of situated all the way around the ski hill, so we tried to go up a lift, ski over to the bottom of the next one, go back up and repeat. We hit almost every lift on the hill! I am still a little timid about going fast downhill and my abilities to stop myself, but Brandon’s advice to bend my knees, “lean uphill”, and pretend like it’s ice skating really helped (I used to ice skate back in the day). By the end of the afternoon, I really felt like I was going a lot faster and was confident even on the steepest hills we took on. It was so so so much fun – I even offered to go one last time this season and ski at a local hill so I can get some more practice!

I could almost end the post here because it was such a perfect day, but I have to share oneee last thing that I’ve been dying to post about for ages – our “picture wall” is done!

IMG_1745

Ugh, my point-and-shoot is so bootleg. Should have stuck with the iPhone. Anyway, a few close-ups:

IMG_1747

A postcard of my hometown created by my grandma, who is a photographer. They’re sold at the local art institute – how cool?

IMG_1748

An authentic mask given to Brandon as a gift from one of his best friends – I believe it’s from Gambia.

IMG_1749

Plus, we included lots of pictures of the cool places we’ve been together (and separately) – notably San Diego, Jackson Hole and of course, UW Madison. I tried to include fun tidbits where I could – a ticket from the San Diego zoo, my ticket from the football game when the Badgers beat #1 Ohio State two seasons ago, a lift ticket from Jackson Hole.

We got the idea from Young House Love’s frame wall, and followed their technique exactly. We cut out templates of the frames to lay out exactly where we wanted to hang them:

IMG_0173

And then a bearded helper elf did an outstanding job of hammering nails where the templates were placed and hanging each frame:

IMG_0340

The eight round mirrors were a gift from my mom, and they really made the arrangement. They provided just a littleeeee more spatial coverage, and I was sure to put the larger mirrors at eye-height so I can see how  awesome I look when I first wake up in the morning.

I think it turned out so well and really adds a personal touch as you head up or down the stairs.

IMG_0333

The whole project took us well over a month. I bought the frames and hung the templates almost immediately after we decided to go for it, but it took me a long time to choose the photos, edit them, and get them printed via Shutterfly. The end result was worth the wait!

We have a couple other apartment projects that we are slowly-but-surely chipping away at – can’t wait to share those, too!

So, what do you think? Do you like the frames? Think we should have gone with black instead of white? (I like how the white plays off the door frame and pantry door). How was your weekend? Did you get a chance to get outside?

And, I gotta ask… are you looking forward to a future of more Britta-blogging?!? … I am!

Almost two months ago (which is crazy – two months ago already?!) I posted about getting ready to live with your significant other, including how to decide that you’re ready for such a big step, how important it for both people to feel like it’s “their” home, finding the right apartment, maintaining alone time and discussing finances. Sheesh – I had a lot to say when all we had accomplished was *finding* the place. Fast forward two months: we are now fully moved in and have spent the last two weeks as official roommates :) Here’s round two of my tips for moving in with your significant other – which are mostly applicable to moving in with any roommate!

  • Have a plan for packing and moving. B and I tried to do as much as possible ahead of time in terms of packing boxes and planning the  moved. We moved smaller loads to the new apartment using our own cars, then pre-loaded his parent’s trailer the night before schlepping it over to the new place the next morning. When you break it up into smaller chunks, the job seems more manageable.
  • Remember that moving sucks for everyone. I got a teny-bit princess-like a few times during the move because it felt like such a long move to me – I started moving things to B’s old apartment in the beginning of May, finished moving out of my apartment in Madison over two trips back home after graduation (with no help… although I didn’t ask for any ;) ), lived out of boxes/my car for 6 weeks, then re-packed my car again for the final trip up to the Cities in the end of June. Phew. I promise I’m done whining about it now, for good. Anyway – I had a few moments where I took out the stress on B, and I shouldn’t have. Moving sucked for him, too, and it definitely wasn’t fun for his parents, who were nice enough to volunteer to drive a truck and trailer all the way up from our hometown to help us move. I tried to keep in mind that I was lucky to have help at all, and that we were all in it together. It’s worth remembering when the “OH MY GOD I HATE MOVING” moments strike – because they always do.
  • Unpacking – split up the work and do it fast. This strategy worked for us. Again, unpacking sucks so you might as well accept that and get it over with. We laid out (mostly ahead of time using our floor plan) where we were going to put everything, then each worked out the boxes we had packed of our “own” stuff. Even though we were exhausted, we unpacked about 80% of our stuff in the first two or three days after moving. If you wait too long – it’s just Newton’s laws of motion ;) . An object at rest tends to stay at rest. We’re about 90% unpacked now, and that last 10% is on my list before I start work next week. Also – don’t be afraid to throw stuff away at *any* point during moving. Anything you don’t use, haven’t used for a year, and won’t use in the next year – toss it.
  • It’s okay to set some rules and split up the chores. I usually cook, B cleans up after we eat. The den is a no-clothes-on-the-floor zone (he has the weirdest tendencies of putting his shirts everywhere… and he has already broken this rule today. Heh.). My laptop has a “home” and it’s supposed to live there (still working on that one – I leave it laying on the couch, on the counter, you name it. Drives B crazy!). Try to be open about what drives you crazy or when you feel like you are doing more work, and set a “rule” you can agree on to fix it.
  • Again –make the apartment feel like “ours”. We have tried to make decisions together on decorating, furniture placement, groceries and closet space. Even if you are moving into an apartment or home where the other person already lives, it’s important for both people to feel like they live there and aren’t just a long-term guest.
  • Share the expenses. The rule on this one is “do what works” (ala Get Rich Slowly) but make sure both people (or all roommates if you are moving into a multi-person situation!) are comfortable with how money is being spent on community space and objects. Here’s what worked for us:

Since we found our apartment and started shopping for items for it (bedding, décor, etc.), we have been keeping every receipt. We tried to split the immediate costs by taking turns paying for items, with the understanding that we would “even out” in the end.  We’ve been doing the same with shared groceries  and restaurants, and we are planning to keep those receipts to compare prices at the different stores we shop at and try to be more cost-conscious about our food expenses. Yesterday, we compiled a spreadsheet with 2 tabs. One on tab, we listed each of these purchases including date, location, purchase description, total cost and which of us paid. Then we created a “pivot table” (google this if you don’t know how – it isn’t as scary as it seems!) that lists how much each of us has spent on shared expenses and breaks that total down by category (Ours so far: apartment purchases, groceries, entertainment).  We are also using a salary-based ratio to “adjust” this total – the same idea many couples use in contributing a percentage of each of their salaries to a shared expense account.I also recently posted about tracking your expenses and how to use Mint’s personal finance software. B and I both use Mint to get an overview of our personal finances, and we went back and re-categorized our individual accounts to help us track shared expenses relative to our individual finances (basically making our Mint categories follow the same category system of our shared-expenses tracker). I’ll be writing another post soon on budgeting – I’ll should be able to be more comprehensive and informative on that topic once I have received a few paychecks and have a better idea of my income versus expenses :)

  • Learn how to have alone time, and don’t be afraid to schedule separate trips. B and I have dated over a long distance for most of our adult (post-high school for me ;) ) relationship, and we were in the mentality of  make every minute we have together count! Since we moved in together, we have many more opportunities to spend time together, so we have cutting back on “special occasion” behavior like going out for tons of dinners and spending entire weekends on the couch together. To be frank, I am the type of person that needs a decent amount of private time and B appreciates being able to do his thang, too. Learning how to chill out on being attached at the hip has been important. Don’t feel like you have to go everywhere together either – I’m skipping out on a camping trip B is doing with his high school buds and family, and I am trying to plan a visit to Chicago to see my college friends.
  • And finally, enjoy the “Christmas morning” period. B and I are still super excited about being in a new apartment, in a new neighborhood, with seemingly unlimited time to hang out with no trip-back-to-Wisconsin looming on Sunday night. I’m loving the Christmas morning feeling I’m still getting every day when I wake up, and I hope it lasts forever – but I’m enjoying every second just in case ;)

I hope you thought a couple of these points were informative or at least a little entertaining – I’m sure my views and advice are going to change over the next year but these tips will *definitely* help anyone about to move in with a new person, whether a significant other, new/old friends, or even a random roommate. Do you have any advice for someone living with a new roommate?

Holy guacamole – just realized that today marks the 2 week mark until I start my new job :) Now that moving is mostly over – let the new countdown begin!

Today is starting to feel like a return to normal life. One great thing about the new apartment is there is a tonnnnn of natural light (I am BIG on sunshine. A sunny day almost always means a better day for me) so I was up and at ‘em when B got up for work this morning. At his old cave-dweller apartment I usually slept for hours after he got up in the morning, but it was so easy to get up this morning with the sunshine streaming in :) I took advantage of having the whole day ahead of me by kicking some major bootay in the apartment – all my clothes have a home, all the laundry is clean, our new bookshelf is full and I had a delish and healthy lunch of tuna salad with spinach and yummerz cherry tomatoes:

I was going for a tuna salad sans-mayo à la Two Girls on the Go – used one can of solid white tuna, extra virgin olive oil, Trader Joe’s 21 Spice Salute (which, by the way, is AMAZING. I’ve been putting it on everything – buy some if you are stopping at TJ’s anytime soon!), a smidge of minced garlic and 5 crumbled whole wheat Wheat Thins. It was tasty, but I miss the stick-together-ness of tuna salad with mayo… I grossly really like mayonnaise, haha. I have been trying to wean myself off of it so this was a good first attempt, but any suggestions to make it more… mayo-like would be appreciated ;)

I also did a little quality Netflix watching today…

GREEK. So bad, it’s good. I’ve previously watched the first 2 seasons (I think during my sophomore or junior year of college) and threw myself into season 3 while I worked around the apartment today. I don’t know why I enjoy it so much… it’s possible being involved in the Greek system myself makes me appreciate the for-TV sorority cheesiness ;)

After the bootay-kicking, munching and bad TV, I hit up our fitness center for the first time. It’s pretty decent – two treadmills, two ellipticals, and I think some bikes and a rower plus free weights and some weight machines. I’ll have to snap a quick piccy the next time I go down there – I didn’t take my phone or anything today. The SWEET part of my workout was that the room has 2 TVs with cable – score! We decided not to spend the extra money on cable for the apartment so now I know my go-to place for a Bravo fix ;) The SUCKY part of my workout was that my knee was extremely ouchy today. I’m not sure if I tweaked it during the moving-intensity-of-death, or if I’m just a little creaky since I didn’t do a lot of structured working out last week… or it’s possible my body just hates the treadmill as much as my brain does :(

No matter the reason, trying to run today really sucked. I did a 5 minute warm up, ran between 5.8-6.0 mph on a 1.5 incline for 15 minutes, and then my knee started bugging me. I decided to not risk it and chill out, so I walked on a 2.5 incline for 10 minutes while psyching myself up to try to run the last 10 minutes of the workout. At minute 30, I lowered the incline and started to jog again and my knee was practically screaming “STOP DOING THAT!!!”… so I stopped after not even 2 whole minutes had gone by. Ugh, I’m really starting to be over this whole running thing. I wanted to finish out my normal time at least (which would be 5 minute warm up, 30 min run, 5 min cooldown = 40 min) so I just walked it out til the 40 minute mark and sort of limped pathetically back upstairs.

Disappointing. I’m going to try to ease the pain by trying out a new recipe/experiment tonight (chicken parmesan casserole – I’ll share if it’s any good!) and if that doesn’t work, there’s always vino ;) How was everyone’s Monday? Hope you are feeling productive (like me) and kicked bootay if you worked out today (unlike me).
