Hello! A quick dose of random updates for you tonight!

I returned on Friday from the first business trip I’ve been on with my current company. I was attending a conference called the Shingo Prize Conference, which focuses on management systems and strategies for achieving “operational excellence” (for those in the biz I work on implementing Lean and driving continuous improvement in a manufacturing environment sooo this conference is basically a mothership for my kind). I learned SO much and had the privilege of listening to and meeting knowledgeable people from many different industries but I will spare you all a full-on geek-out on my personal blog.

However, I will NOT spare you from pictures of all the fun stuff I did when my coworkers and I weren’t working hard at the conference! None of these pics are edited, sorry no profeshunul Photoshop skillz today.

I know the quality of this picture is undeniably the worst but I can’t get over the THOUSANDS of flowers planted in Temple Square. These were the most beautiful flowers I think I have ever seen.

We spent our last night hiking in Little Cottonwood Canyon. It was SO SO cool to drive through the same areas Brandon and I saw during our ski trip in March, when there was a lot more snow! We actually climbed up pretty high and did some casual rock climbing that was out of my normal comfort zone and now I think I’m hooked. I can’t wait to go scrambling around on some rocks the first chance I get on a camping trip this summer.

Last day – after plant tours, we spent the afternoon on Main Street in Park City. Can I please just move to Utah now?

UGH! What an awesome trip! The weather was beautiful almost the entire time, with just a few rain showers here and there. I couldn’t stop staring at the mountains and the sunshine felt so amazing on my face after such a long winter in MN. I saw people golfing, biking, climbing, running, and I heard there were even ski resorts still open! Utah. God’s country, man. The only downfall is the requirement that you have to buy snacks with any alcohol, but that can very well be seen as a positive I think ;)

How goes the running? My training has gone really well the past week or so to my complete surprise. My “long” runs of 7, 8 and 9 miles were absolutely brutal over the last month with a LOT of walk breaks and painfully slow paces. To be honest, I did not have a lot of endurance built up before beginning my half marathon training plan and it was starting to bite me. I also experienced intense leg pain and calf tightness after my 7-mile-long-run week, which I partially blame on waiting too long to replace my shoes. I had been running in my old New Balance shoes for well over 2 years and had completely trained for my last half in those shoes. I went to a specialty store (Marathon Sports for TC people – HIGHLY recommend!) and got fitted by a running shoe expert. I ended up in the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13 shoes – they feel great on my feet and seem to have cleared up all the knee and calf pain I was experiencing.

IMG_2733

My running is getting better but I don’t think my self portrait skills are improving at all.

So, I took it really easy the week my calves were so tight, reinvested in a foam roller (Teto completely shredded our old one) and struggled to do my best on the next few weeks of running. Last week, my training wasn’t  too consistent – I logged a quick 3 miles on the hotel treadmill DYING in the elevation and worked hard on the hike, but that’s it. On Sunday, I think the extra rest helped me push through a steady 10 miles, no walking, feeling great. I went from spending almost 2 hours in the fetal position wanting to throw up after my 9 mile run to feeling like I was on cloud nine just a week later after 10. I have 3 more full weeks before my half marathon race so fingers crossed the runs continue to go well and the race is just as enjoyable! Keys: hydrate well all week, avoid booze the night before running (der), and fuel after mile 6 (Mocha Clif gels are my fav).

Finally, this is belated but I need to give a blog shoutout to my roomie, friend, life coach, travel buddy, recipe tester and life love for his birthday <3

This is the most mild of all the embarrassing photos I was tempted to post! and it has a baby Teto in it!

I love this guy so much I even allowed Saturday’s birthday celebrations to commence at Fogo de Chao, home of never-ending skewers of RED MEAT. And boozy papaya cream. Actually delicious.

I love you, Brandon!

Hi loves! Just popping in to share some stories and pictures from our trip last week to Park City, UT. Brandon and I decided back in December that we wanted to go on a ski trip “out west” together this year. Brandon almost always takes a trip with friends each winter (Big Sky this year) and occasionally does trips with his parents and brother, but we have not been on a “big” ski trip together since skiing Jackson Hole with friends in 2010. I really learned to ski during that trip to Jackson Hole and had tested out my skills a few times since at ski hills in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I was feeling ready to tackle some bigger mountains and push myself to become a better/faster skier.

Travel/Lodging

IMG_2329

Brandon swears by road tripping for ski vacations, and is the route we took for our last trip to Jackson Hole. Beside the fact that we just love being on the road (like our trips to Yellowstone and NOLA), driving your own vehicle on a ski trip can just be more convenient than flying in a lot of ways. Especially with larger groups with the option of an in-lodging kitchen, driving to your destination offers the appeal of prepping and freezing easy meals like lasagna and soups and the ability to cook up hearty breakfasts like pancakes or eggs before a day on the slopes. Obviously it is a great way to bring along all your gear (boots, skis, bulky outerwear, etc.) without paying to check multiple bags, too.

Brandon and I both have a Gold Delta Skymiles credit card, which we had each signed up for in periods of our careers that were more travel-centric (We are actually looking to switch to a fee-free cash rewards card, if you have any suggestions!). The card comes with a perk of a $99 companion ticket on a domestic flight each year, and since it was just the two of us on this trip and we had the option of the discounted ticket, we decided to buck the road trip tradition and fly to Salt Lake City for this trip. We checked one bag between the two of us for larger ski wear and Brandon’s boots (I don’t own any – YET!). This checked bag was also got for free with the credit card perks, and rented skis and boots when we arrived at the hotel. Our plan was to fly in on Saturday, get room and rentals arranged, ski Sunday through Tuesday and fly out Wednesday afternoon.

The hotel we chose is called the Newpark Resort & Hotel. When we planned the trip, we decided we wanted to ski more than one of the ski resorts surrounding Salt Lake City but we weren’t sure which ones quite yet. We picked a hotel in Park City that would give us nearby access to multiple resorts so we could kind of “wing it” once we got there.

The hotel was great – cozy rooms with nice additions like flat screen TVs, kitchenette area and fireplace. The location worked well and was near to several restaurants and stores, with a view of the mountains from the outdoor hot tub!

The hotel is also right across the road from the Olympic Park used in the 2002 Winter Olympics, which was fun to drive through and imagine what the ceremonies must have been like.

Ski Destinations

IMG_2360

Once we arrived, we ended up skiing Deer Valley (Days 1 & 3) and Alta (Day 2). Deer Valley is known for impeccable guest service, ski runs groomed almost daily, and upscale dining options. We had to see what all the fuss is about. Brandon has had Alta at the top of his “To Ski” list as long as I’ve known him, mostly because of Utah’s claim that it has the best snow in the world.

IMG_2401

Deer Valley lived up to the hype! I would describe myself as a solid “intermediate” skier. I can handle pretty much any blue run at the resorts I’ve been to, but don’t have the appetite for speed and risk that take Brandon and his friends barreling through trees and down super-steep black diamonds. I might get there someday, but for now I reallyyyyy appreciate well-groomed ski runs, what can I say! I think a lot of the groomy love also came from the fact that we got zero inches of snow on the trip so conditions on non-groomed runs were definitely a little chopped up and rough. The food at Deer Valley was off-the-charts (more on that in a minute), and I loved taking in the beautiful scenery (and scoping out the surrounding multi-million dollar homes!).

Alta was also absolutely breathtaking, and we got a little bit of our fix for driving up and through the mountains as we wound through the Little Cottonwood Canyon.

IMG_2409

The rock features and exposed cliffs in Utah make me want to head back ASAP for hiking in the summer, and we even saw a couple hardcore climbers out on the rocks during the drive. Nothing like avalanche warning signs to remind you who’s in charge when it comes down to man vs. nature, too Smile I loved the runs at Alta and the little routes we took connecting different lifts. I even accomplished my goal of skiing through some mini tree runs on Day 2 – falling down only hurt my pride and I definitely improved as a skier!

IMG_2388

IMG_2387

We had planned on heading back through the canyon to Snowbird on day 3, but unfortunately the wind picked up at the end of our day at Alta and we experienced pretty back visibility and snow blowing in our faces that felt like sand.

IMG_2394

Brandon commented that Snowbird and Alta seemed to him like they are the best options on powder days, and we decided to head back to Deer Valley for better run conditions given the lack of snow and didn’t regret the decision. I even did one black run the last day of the trip and we ended up enjoying lots of sun and warm afternoons both days at Deer Valley.

FOOD!

Given that our last foodie destination was New Orleans, I’m not sure it’s even really a fair comparison, but I have to say I would not recommend Salt Lake City as worth a visit just for the food based on our experiences. Lots of really great food and satisfying meals, but our best meals were actually on the mountain.

The food at the mountain lodges at Deer Valley is unbelievable!

Fish Taco with Guacamole & Jalapenos and Wild Mushroom Soup

We also went home, showered, and headed back for dinner at Deer Valley’s Royal Street Café on Sunday night – I had amazing seared ahi tacos and Brandon loved his pulled pork sandwich. Other places we liked along the way: dinner at Riverhorse on Main was delish (Brandon had surf & turf, I loved my Utah Trout, and there were lovely live musicians playing in the dining room), Red Rock Brewery had satisfying dinner options right next to our hotel, and we had an awesome time eating breakfast at the Eating Establishment on Park City’s Main Street before a walk up and down the tourist-y street our last day in town.

Sigh… this was a vacation that ended too soon. I didn’t have a hint of that usual feeling at the end of a vacation of being ready to return home. I think next time we travel to Utah we may just take a full week! If you are a downhill skiing fan looking for your next destination, I highly recommend the beautiful mountains and warm spring weather of a March vacation to Park City!

Teto seems to be recovering well from our absence but we DID bust him trying to clean up after his massive rager…

How is your weekend going? Any vacations on the horizon? For the skiers out there – what is your MOST favorite ski destination? I’m looking for the next trip to keep in mind… we are considering Steamboat Springs in the next couple of years!

People. If you have not been to Yellowstone National Park, YOU GOTTA GO.

IMG_0958 (Medium)

Our impromptu trip to the park last weekend was the most relaxing, breathtaking and perspective-altering experience I’ve ever had, which is saying something considering we were only in the park for 2 days. Not that things have been bad for me lately by any stretch, but from the time we saw the first snowy mountain peaks to the time we reluctantly packed up and drove away from our second camping site in the Shoshone National Forest, I can honestly say with zero BS that I felt happier and more content than I have felt in a really long time. There is something about facing the effects of millions of years of geological changes and feeling how small you are in the middle of a true wilderness to make your daily worries seem insignificant and far away.

IMG_0975 (Medium)

One of Brandon’s absolute favorite things in the entire world is driving out west. We have driven to San Diego together and took a road trip to Jackson Hole with friends a few winters ago, so we have experienced westward drives together a few times. This trip definitely drove the mountain-fever home for me and I can. not. wait. to plan another trip out that-a way and/or visit another National Park.IMG_0973 (Medium)

I want to share everything about the trip ASAP but we squeezed so many things into the weekend that I just haven’t tackled putting it all together yet. Photos are split between my phone and Brandon’s phone, and unfortunately a lot of the good ones are on Brandon’s phone. Needless to say I haven’t gotten my sh*t together enough to consolidate the pictures yet, and I would really like to go through and edit before sharing. There are SO MANY so I’m really doing you a favor by not forcing you to click through random shots of the car floor and 6 pictures of the same random cliff face.

IMG_0969 (Medium)

Soooo. That’s on the to-do list sometime this week. I’m thinking I’ll upload the pictures to like… Google? Or Picasa? or something? Do people use Photobucket? I don’t know. I kind of hate facebook and I kind of hate looking at people’s massive vacation albums on facebook so I’m not going to go that route. When I figure out what I’m going to do with all these PICTURES!!!, I will provide a link and a more detailed story about the trip Smile

Besides… I have sort of been mentally soaking in all the recent memories of the trip and trying to block out all the real-world humdrum/responsibilities/anxious internal chatter that came flooding back right around the time we reached the Minnesota border on Monday. My attempt to continue existing in the same mindset I got into while surrounded by the scenery of Yellowstone and the absolute BLISS of having no cellphone signal has been a detriment to anything requiring time management and willpower.

IMG_1015 (Medium)

Don’t worry, I’m not quitting my day job or anything, I just haven’t felt like blogging or doing any summer shape up workouts in the past week. I pretty much spent the entire weekend lazing/eating/golfing, and I guess now that a week has passed, it’s time to re-enter the real world. (…but I don’t wanna! Take me back to mountains! I wanna live in a tent and gaze at sheer cliff faces, clear night skies, rushing waterfalls and wild animals!) We did clean the entire apartment top to bottom on Friday night. Which was really one step forward and two steps backward, since I’m pretty sure mopping floors on a Friday night just confirms that we’re newly committed to a life as hermits. Whatevs.

IMG_1012 (Medium)

I’m going to try to shake off the last remnants of vacation daze this week, which could prove challenging considering I have Wednesday off for the 4th of July and we are headed home to go boating and see family next weekend. BUT I will do my best and will be back soon with Yellowstone pictures and a full trip recap (for those that are interested!) and a return to regularly-scheduled programming, like weird pictures of food and failed workout attempts.

IMG_0996 (Medium)

Tell me about your summer vacation plans – have you taken an amazing trip or are planning to? What are you up to for the 4th?
